Sal Whitson
I’m Sal, a private Homebirth Midwife and Mentor with over 25 years of midwifery experience walking alongside women on their unique birthing journeys. Based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, I live with my partner, Rob, and our two children on a permaculture farm. A place where nature, community, and the rhythms of life intertwine.
Supporting Your Scared Journey
Midwifery is more than my profession; it is my calling. Over the years, I have had the honour of witnessing the incredible strength, and tender vulnerability of women as they birth their babies, in their own time and in their own way. My role is to hold space, share knowledge, and offer unwavering support.
Having worked in a range of settings across Australia and New Zealand, from hospital-based maternity units to remote communities, I bring a breadth of experience that informs my deeply personal and holistic approach to care. Six years ago, I transitioned fully into private homebirth midwifery, allowing me to cultivate the continuity of care I know is so essential in fostering confidence, trust, and empowerment throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
Beyond my work with birthing families, I also mentor new midwives and birth workers, sharing the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gathered over decades in this field. I believe in the power of apprenticeship-style learning and hands-on experience, helping the next generation of midwives find their strength and confidence in this sacred work.
Philosophy and Approach
I believe birth is a profound and mysterious rite of passage that can awaken untapped strength and power, yet also leave a woman feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed if she does not receive the care and support she needs. Much of a woman’s life before childbirth can shape what her experience will be like, and within the depths of that intensity, she can discover herself in ways she never imagined. At the heart of this is the knowing that each woman carries an innate wisdom within her. My role as a midwife is to support her connection to that inner knowing, guide her in making informed choices, and nurture a space where she feels safe, respected, and truly seen.
My care is relationship-based, and I take the time to deeply listen, honouring each family's needs, aspirations, and circumstances. From pregnancy and birth preparation, through labour, birth, and into the tender weeks of postpartum, I walk beside you. I hold space for the challenges, the joys, the fears, and the profound transformations that unfold. To witness you emerging as a new version of yourself is a deep honour, and one I carry with immense gratitude.
I look forward to connecting with you.
Midwife Mentorship & Support - Online (90 minutes)
Supporting your Sacred Journey. Holding space for those who hold space.
My calling to mentoring comes from years of walking alongside women and midwives, knowing how vital it is to feel supported, grounded, and not alone in this work. Midwifery is profoundly rewarding, yet it can also be heavy, complex, and at times isolating. These sessions offer a space to feel heard, and to reconnect with the deep soul calling that first drew you to midwifery.
Together we can explore trusting your instincts while practicing safely within guidelines, holding space for women’s right to choose and honouring autonomy, thriving in workplace dynamics without losing yourself, and fostering respectful collegial relationships. Our time together strengthens resilience, confidence, and clarity, while keeping women at the centre of their childbearing experience and safeguarding your own wellbeing.
The path from student to practicing midwife can feel like a collision between what you were taught and what you encounter in the real world. These sessions are here to ground you, reconnect you with your “why,” and offer a safe place to reflect on the lived experience of midwifery work - while nurturing and embodying your deep love for this calling.
Each session blends grounded wisdom with practical guidance (from a peer with over 25 years experience in both home and hospital spaces), supporting you to practice with authenticity, courage, and presence.
Perfect for:

- Unpack and reflect on clinical scenarios you’ve been part of - with someone outside your workplace who has walked this path in many settings across Australia and New Zealand

Anyone Who Needs
- Support around difficult cases that are staying with you

- Help strengthening your midwifery identity and confidence
- A trusted space to explore your career direction and goals
I don't have all the answers - none of us do. But I've learned that every challenge you're facing, I've likely navigated something similar myself. More importantly, I've learned that your own wisdom is always the most valuable guide.
I work with you, not on you. You're the expert on your own experience. I'm here to help you access that wisdom, gain clarity, and develop the confidence to trust yourself in this work.
This isn't about fixing you or telling you what to do. It's about creating space for reflection, offering perspective from someone who's been there, and helping you develop your own approaches to the complexities of midwifery practice.
What This Mentorship is not:
- Clinical supervision or formal assessment
- A space where I'll make decisions for you
- Therapy (though it can be therapeutic)
- A place to get specific medical advice about individual cases
Too often in this profession, we give everything to others and forget to invest in ourselves. This isn't just about solving immediate challenges - it's about developing the skills and resilience that will serve you throughout your entire career.
Please note that as I am still a current Midwife, I am on call 24/7 for births so I may have to reschedule our appointment. As much notice as possible will be provided.

Postpartum Planning & Early Parenting Support - Online - 60 Minutes
Supporting your Sacred Journey. Mapping Your Fourth Trimester.
Because how you're held in those early days shapes everything that follows.
The postpartum period isn't just recovery - it's a profound transformation. After 25 years of supporting families, I know that when you plan for this transition with the same care you plan for birth, everything flows more beautifully.
This is about creating a realistic map for your early weeks, honouring both your practical needs and the emotional and spiritual journey of becoming a mother / or parent.
Perfect for:
- First-time parents preparing for the unknown
- Mapping out support to ensure your family's needs are met
- Addressing feeding concerns and building confidence
- Understanding newborn sleep patterns and gentle approaches
- Processing the emotional adjustment to motherhood
- Supporting partner transitions and relationship changes
- Planning after a previous challenging postpartum experience
The early weeks aren’t about doing everything perfectly - they’re about gently honouring and deeply nourishing your passage into motherhood: being present with your baby, tending to your body, adjusting to shifting hormones, and stepping into your new mothering role with intention and deep care. I share practical wisdom while respecting that every family’s story unfolds in its own way.
You don’t need to be ‘fixed’ - you need to be supported, nourished, and reminded that this adjustment is normal, even when it feels overwhelming. Sometimes what helps most is speaking your experience aloud with someone who truly ‘gets it,’ who can offer perspective, reassurance, and validation, and who is there to deeply listen and witness your postpartum story as it unfolds.
Please note that as I am still a current Midwife, I am on call 24/7 for births so I may have to reschedule our appointment. As much notice as possible will be provided.
