I am a molecular oncologist based in Cambridge, UK. I worked on liquid biopsy, early cancer detection, and cancer epigenetics at the University of Cambridge. I did my PhD at Assam University in India. From there, I moved to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC–WHO) in Lyon, France, in 2015, where I spent seven years before relocating to Cambridge in 2023. I also teach Human Biology at Cambridge Regional College, so I spend a good deal of my time explaining complex science to people at the start of their journey. I mention the route because it is the reason I offer these sessions. Moving from a regional university in South Asia into international cancer research is possible, but the path is rarely explained honestly: how applications are actually read, what makes a CV credible to a European lab, when a field switch is realistic and when it is not, and where the genuine entry points are. Over the past few years I have received a growing number of messages from PhD students and early-career researchers asking exactly these questions. I used to answer them all individually. I could not keep pace. These consultations are how I now give that time properly, with preparation, rather than in fragments between experiments. I cannot offer you a position or a referral. What I can offer is a frank assessment of where you stand and what your realistic next step is.
