Get startedThe whole idea behind Cal.com is to make scheduling easy. We're not just here to help you save time; we're here to help you own your time. We know that having access to the right tools when you need them is game-changing. We also know that since we offer so many options, sometimes a little extra clarification is needed.
In this article, we're going to look at the difference between date overrides and out-of-office settings.
Date overrides are a setting that lets you temporarily edit your availability schedule. You might be wondering why someone would want to do that. Well, here's a scenario: let's say one of your coworkers is suddenly out sick. You're the person who's best suited to cover for them for the next few days.
This means that for half a week, your schedule is going to be altered. If you edit your schedule using the date override feature, as soon as this time period has passed, the changes will expire.
This means that there's one less thing for you to keep track of while you're holding the fort down.
Now that we understand what a date override is, let's look at setting one up. Don't worry if you've never done this before because I'm going to walk you through it. Just follow the steps below:
Log in to your Cal.com account.
Select the availability tab.
Click on the availability schedule that you want to edit.
Scroll down until you see the date overrides section.
Click on the button marked "plus add an override."
Select the date and time frame for your override.
Click on the "save" or "override" button.
Next, click on the close button.
Finally, scroll to the top of the page and click on the save button.
There you go! As you can see, setting up a date override is super straightforward and only takes a couple of moments. So now that all of that's been covered, let's take a look at Cal.com's out-of-office feature.
Cal.com's out-of-office feature is great for communicating individual absences, both planned and unforeseen. The out-of-office feature can be used to schedule vacation time and communicate sick days. If you're someone who's part of a team or enterprise plan, you can also use the out-of-office feature to help prevent client confusion and lost leads.
The reason you can do this is because paid subscribers have the option of rerouting their bookings to another team member if they're unavailable. This is fantastic because it means that even if you're not on the clock, the ball won't be dropped.
There are two ways you can access your out-of-office settings. Option one: you can go to your general account settings and scroll down until you find the out-of-office section. Option two: you can just type ooo.new in your browser bar and hit enter.
No matter which method you choose, you're going to end up in the right place. Once you're in front of that out-of-office dashboard, you can add as many dates as you need to and, where appropriate, a little explanation.
It's important to remember that out-of-office settings are applied on a per-account basis. This means that if you're out of office, then that's going to impact all of your appointments and availability schedules that are tied to your specific account.
So now you understand the difference between date overrides and Cal.com's out-of-office settings. Date overrides apply limited-term changes to an entire availability schedule. The out-of-office setting, on the other hand, impacts a single individual and offers an option for rerouting appointments.
